The Former President's System of Retribution and Reward

Donald Trump's voracious appetite for revenge has rapidly evolved into a structured apparatus. During the past year, the president's fury and whims have adopted the form of administrative measures in a manner reminiscent to historical dictatorial systems. Government figures who resist his demands are summarily fired and substituted by devotees. Political leaders who question him risk prosecution, court proceedings and punishment. Critics have been categorized under administration directives as “hostile to national interests”, “anti-Christian” and “opposing economic freedom”, and warned with prosecution as “extremists”.

The Justice System Transformed

Each situation involving legal action of critics and immunity for his allies demonstrates its own particular characteristics. Yet, regardless of their specific nature, they exemplify manifestations of what has developed as a deliberate approach. Those incidents are not isolated. The administration's cleansing of federal lawyers and FBI agents, alongside his installation of loyalists in senior posts, began quickly, quickly assumed a consistency, and has now been formed into a structure. The justice department and the law enforcement agency have been remade into political bodies under the president's explicit direction to carry out his directives. Injustice has been rendered standard. It represents the retribution system.

Leadership is more concerned with penalizing the chief's perceived adversaries than they are with defending our country's safety.

Internal the Apparatus

The beginnings of this framework has been exposed in the lawsuit of three previous high-ranking Federal Bureau agents submitted in September in the federal court in the capital against agency head a senior appointee and justice department head Pam Bondi for illegal termination in “a campaign of payback against them for what administration figures deemed to be a inability to show sufficient political loyalty”. The document states that Brian Driscoll, the former interim leader, describes a discussion in which Patel “openly confessed the unlawfulness of his actions”.

The official had attempted to shield FBI agents from being fired, the complaint alleges. Patel told him that “administration officials” – interpreted by him to be the executive branch and justice department – had instructed him to fire all those who they identified as having participated in a legal probe against him. The complaint goes on: “The director clarified that he had to dismiss the individuals his bosses told him to remove, because his chance to hold his own job depended on the ouster of the officials who handled matters involving the chief executive. He explained that there was nothing he or him could do to stop these or any other terminations, because ‘the bureau attempted to put the chief in prison and he hasn't forgotten it.’” Once he informed him he was breaking the bureau's own policies, he supposedly said “he knew that and he realized the nature of the swift terminations were probably unlawful”.

Extensive Consequences

After Patel's alleged acknowledgment to the official, the DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been gutted and redirected for the administration's system of punishment. Several of the bureau's high-ranking agents were fired or forced out in the first days of the administration. About thousands of lawyers at the department have agreed to a “voluntary departure plan”. No fewer than multiple federal prosecutors, including those in the New York office, quit in protest over what they regarded as ideological pressure in dropping the criminal prosecution against the New York City mayor, Eric Adams, in exchange for his collaboration with his federal agency arrests of immigrants. The public integrity section of the justice department, which manages misconduct investigations, has been diminished to a handful of lawyers. The civil rights division has been decimated: the majority of its employees has resigned. 33% of top officials at DoJ have resigned. The section implementing conservation statutes has experienced the exit of half its leadership.

Rewards and Sanctions

In the legal matter, the acting US attorney for the southern district of New York, the official, stepped down in dissent against what she characterized as the “trade-off”. The border official, his “border czar,” was present as the implementer with the mayor on television to declare: “If he doesn't come through, I will return in NYC.”. And, a former official, formerly the senior DoJ official and a former Trump attorney, who negotiated the agreement, was given an court role, a likely pathway to the highest court.

Trump's immunity for crimes committed while in office, granted by the unprecedented judgment of the Republican majority on the highest court, thus thwarting his legal action over the January 6 insurrection and maintaining his public standing for the national vote, is the foundation stone on which he relies to shield his stalwarts. Given this protection, he has been freed to authorize misconduct. The effect of the court judgment permeates his presidency and the GOP down to its bones. The legal case has spread.
