Oklahoma City Thunder Begin Title Defense with Dramatic Double Overtime Win
The Thunder star came to the Thunder back in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the decisive baskets late in double overtime as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a 125-124 victory over the Houston Rockets.
Last season's MVP scored 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, securing the titleholders a winning beginning.
The Rockets' big man top-scored with a game-high 39 and also connected on a career-high five three-pointers.
But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points, played a major role together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Determination and defense," SGA commented of their performance. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, good luck or misfortune. We did enough defensive work to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."
Prior to the game, the team's title banner was raised at their home court, while the players were awarded their title rings.
Oklahoma City beat the Indiana Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the team relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the chance to secure some early revenge on this Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston return to action on the same day at the Pistons.
In other action, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was insufficient to prevent his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.
Miami's star picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 points for the visiting Warriors.
The Lakers were without the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from sciatica.
